First exhibition for 9/11

This is the first time 9/11 is going out from Dorothée's "atelier de peinture". The roses of painting should now be dry and it's spring ! Time to blossom and do a first expo.

Dorothée will join the exhibition organized with the help of the ALPY association and the city of Saint-Germain-en-Laye at the Espace Paul et André Vera from May 21 to 29, 2011: www.alpy.asso.fr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=138:venez-voir-notre-exposition-&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=50

Thanks for joining & don't hesitate to contact her if you want to share a drink at the "vernissage" next Tuesday May 24.

YESSS SHE MADE IT !!!

18 hours of non-stop work: and here's the result !

Pasting the gold between each rose:

Only 1 comment: "YES WE CAN !"

Last rose @ 8:46 NY time

I had told you Dorothée had painted all the roses but one. She was keeping it for a special occasion. The 1rst rose was sculpted @ 8:46 exactly one year ago and the last one @ 8:46 on Saturday 9/11/2010...

It's not the bigest one...but yet one of the most important !

11/09/2010 11:19

And today is the last rush: 9/11...

One year after starting this challenge, the painting is about to be finished.

Will Dorothée make it on time ?

Missing the last rose and still quite some gold...

Wowww ! That's what I said on Wednesday after a few days out

The more gold, the more the roses come to life ! It's astonishing !

Quite sure Dorothée has finished on her knees !

Working from a chair

Noticed the work Dorothée's done in a week ?

Finishing by this 9/11 might be doable afterall !

At least Dorothée can work comfortably :-)

but soon she'll have to knee down...

NUMB3RS ?

Check the numbers on the side of the canvas...

...counting the roses !

01/09/2010 09:28

The race has started !

Dorothée has been spending these entire last days "sticking" Gold onto the painting's background. How many hours of repeated movements ? 15, 20,... more ?

What's sure is that this job is time consuming ! She says it's relaxing ;-)

Check the result by yourself.

Sunday:                                                                Now:

See any difference ?

Focus on the technical side: the Gold

And here's part 2 of the gigantisc task: fill in the "empty spots" with 22 carat Gold leaves.

This part is less constraining in terms of "feelings" (no hastle wondering which colors to mix, chosing the right size & the location of each rose) but is very time consumming and requires a great technical skills.

* Dorothée starts mixing the fixator with some red oil and "paints it on the white areas" with a tiny paintbrush:

* She then takes 2 other brushes to create electrostatic energy to "stick" a minuscule piece of the gold leaf to one of the brushes:

* The last operation consists in "pasting this minuscule Gold piece at the right spot":

Yess !

Question: how many times will she have to do these operations to cover all the background ???

Methodology, Precision, Patience and an enormous Perseverance !

Focus on the technical side : the roses

Here are some pix showing the artwork realized for each of the near-to-3000 roses.

* For each rose, Dorothée has mixed oil colors from a very large variety of Rembrand oils:

* Positioning & sculpting roses in 3D:

This phase of the project has taken nearly 12 months while ensuring that each rose was unique and had the time to dry enough to continue the work !

29/08/2010 12:56

All the roses except 1 are sculpted...

Now that the "frame of roses" is layed down, dorothée can focus on filling the background with gold.

It's an enourmous work !

Here's the result after a few dozen of hours:

29/07/2010 18:24

Over 2680 roses !!!

Less than 300 to go and then start taking care of the background...

10/01/2010 17:37

January 1, 2010

911 has now over 950 roses, almost 1/3 of the final total !

22/10/2009 14:00

October 5, 2009

Over 400 roses.

"Tied by Destiny" starts to be completely unreadable...

27/09/2009 18:51

September 27, 2009

Over 200 roses...

11/09/2009 19:46

First roses painted on 9/11/2009

The first rose was sculpted at 8:46 am NY time.

Astonishingly, it fell...(1rst time ever a rose fell in 20 years of painting !).

11/09/2009 14:36

D Day H-10 minutes

Waiting for the 1rst rose !!!

05/07/2009 12:58

Canvas ordered !

This is the real starting date of the project. The next step is to clean up the new "atelier de peinture"...

Welcome to Dorothée's 9/11 Commemoration project

After the "2000 roses" painted for the millennium, Dorothée decided to work on a monumental painting to commemorate the 9/11 event. Specialized in the creation of sculpted roses in oil painting, her symbolic project consists in a painting with as many roses as there were victims.

The project consists in a master piece canvas :

  • of 154cm * 250cm
  • which includes 2974 sculpted roses
  • made with oil painting
  • and 23c gold leaves
